Ly α emission galaxies at a redshift of z ≈ 5 . 7 in the FORS Deep Field ⋆

چکیده
We present the results of a search for Lyα emission galaxies at z ≈ 5.7 in the FORS Deep Field. The objective of this study is to improve the faint end of the luminosity function of high-redshift Lyα emitting galaxies and to derive properties of intrinsically faint Lyα emission galaxies in the young universe. Using FORS2 at the ESO VLT and a set of special interference filters, we identified candidates for high-redshift Lyα galaxies. We then used FORS2 in spectroscopic mode to verify the identifications and to study their spectral properties. The narrow-band photometry resulted in the detection of 15 likely Lyα emission galaxies. Spectra with an adequate exposure time could be obtained for eight galaxies . In all these cases the presence of Lyα emission at z = 5.7 was confirmed spectroscopically. The line fluxes of the 15 candidates range between 3 × 10Wm and 16 × 10Wm, which corresponds to star-formation rates not corrected for dust between 1 and 5 M⊙yr . The luminosity function derived for our photometrically identified objects extends the published luminosity functions of intrinsically brighter Lyα galaxies. With this technique the study of high-redshift Lyα emission galaxies can be extended to low intrinsic luminosities.

Constraints to the evolution of Ly - α bright galaxies between z = 3 and z = 6 ⋆
Galaxies at high redshift with a strong Ly-α emission line trace massive star formation in the absence of dust, and can therefore be regarded as a prime signature of the first major starburst in galaxies. We report results of the Ly-α search within the Calar Alto Deep Imaging Survey (CADIS). With imaging FabryPerot interferometer CADIS can detect emission lines in three waveband windows free of...
متن کاملA Group of Galaxies at Redshift 2.38
We report the discovery of a group of galaxies at redshift 2.38. We imaged ∼ 10% of a claimed supercluster of QSO absorption-lines at z = 2.38 (Francis & Hewett 1993). In this small field (2 radius) we detect two Ly-α emitting galaxies. The discovery of two such galaxies in our tiny field supports Francis & Hewett’s interpretation of the absorption-line supercluster as a high redshift ‘Great Wa...
متن کاملGalaxies at high redshifts – observing galaxies in the cradle
Due to the invention of new powerful instruments in the recent past (e.g. 10m class telescopes) high redshift galaxies are no longer a curiosity. High redshift young star forming galaxies can be effectively discriminated from the much more abundant foreground galaxies by their special spectral properties: a prominent break at the Lyman limit (i.e. a complete absence of flux at wavelength below ...
متن کاملTHE STELLAR MASS FUNCTION OF GALAXIES TO z ∼ 5 IN THE FORS DEEP AND GOODS-S FIELDS
We present a measurement of the evolution of the stellar mass function (MF) of galaxies and the evolution of the total stellar mass density at 0 < z < 5, extending previous measurements to higher redshift and fainter magnitudes (and lower masses). We use deep multicolor data in the Fors Deep Field (FDF; I-selected reaching IAB ∼ 26.8) and the GOODS-S/CDFS region (K-selected reaching KAB ∼ 25.4)...
متن کاملThree Lyman-α Emitters at Z ≈ 6: Early Gmos/gemini Data from the Glare Project
We report spectroscopic detection of three z ∼ 6 Lyman-α emitting galaxies, in the vicinity of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, from the early data of the Gemini Lyman-α at Reionisation Era (GLARE) project. Two objects, GLARE#3001 (z = 5.79) and GLARE#3011 (z = 5.94), are new detections and are fainter in z (z AB = 26.37 and 27.15) than any Lyman break galaxy previously detected in Lymanα. A third ...
